"Fire, man"

Artwork Details

Description

This action painting was created with rage, passion and completely in the moment. I used spray paint and heavy duty wire on linen to create it. My father was a Chicago firefighter and I used to stay at the fire house as a kid and ride in the fire truck with him on runs. I watched him lead his crew up into burning buildings. He was badly burned when I was a kid which was traumatic for me, seeing his melted skin. Fire has always been a strong symbol of destruction and beauty and danger in my life. As has been wire; because like him in his 'side job' I was a journeyman electrician. I hate wire and I hated wiring houses in the dead of winter in Chicago. The thrash marks were made with violent strokes using heavy duty wire, and I injured myself in the process. Is it true that I must first go through the fire to become a man?
