La Muerte Que Da La Vida

Understanding death has always been an interest of mine as long as I can remember, probably because of coming face to face with it so often from a young age. However, since my mother's suicide a few years ago, I've been in deep mourning. It has been a complex journey unpacking the emotions around when an abuser - who I did love because she was my mother and I was raised very protestant Christian - dies. There is relief of no more suffering knowing she was tortured herself  but sorrow for the redemption you hope for but will never experience.

A huge point of healing for me is the understanding and acceptance of death in Mexican culture as part of life contrasted against the United States antiseptic and suppressive death industrial complex. One figure I see around Mexico City a lot is Santa Muerte. While her worship is controversial at best, for me as someone who has lost their mother I find comfort in the figure of death as a woman as a symbol as the title says "Death that gives Life".
